Strawhun Crisis C.A.R.E. Center
Merrillville, Indiana
Regional Health Systems selected The Pangere Corporation as the General Contractor for the development of the Strawhun Crisis C.A.R.E. Center, a cutting-edge facility designed to provide immediate, life-saving support to individuals experiencing mental health crises. This facility, which took over a year and a half to develop, is a critical addition to Regional Health Systems’ mission to enhance crisis care resources within the community.
The Strawhun Crisis C.A.R.E. Center embodies the No Wrong Door philosophy, offering 24/7 access to immediate care and connecting individuals in crisis with the right resources. By reducing reliance on costly hospitalizations and law enforcement interventions, the center ensures individuals receive timely, specialized mental health support.
Bill Trowbridge, CEO of Regional Health Systems, shared his enthusiasm: “The Strawhun Crisis C.A.R.E. Center is a game-changer. Rather than waiting for an appointment, anyone in crisis can walk in and receive immediate care—just like an urgent care center, but specifically for mental health emergencies. This facility will transform the landscape of mental health care in our community.”
The Pangere Corporation worked in close collaboration with architects Vintage Archonics throughout the pre-planning and construction phases to bring this vision to life. The 3,000 sq. ft. facility includes four LRM Care Units, providing clients with immediate assessment and a personalized care plan. The center also features two private consultation rooms, separate adult and adolescent lounges, two secure sensory quiet rooms for emergency evaluations, ligature-resistant restrooms, and an HKP Room. In the heart of the center, two sub-care stations support the daily administrative tasks managed by the Strawhun Crisis C.A.R.E. Unit staff.
Designed to be visually welcoming and non-clinical, the facility’s aesthetic creates a warm, calming atmosphere—making clients feel at ease, as though visiting a doctor’s office rather than a hospital setting.
